I made one more trek down to Atlanta this past week for my best friends’ baby shower. Erin and I met freshman year at Vanderbilt and were longtime roommates in DC. Erin got married two years ago and sadly moved down to Atlanta. Despite the distance, we have remained close friends, and she is expecting her first child (a boy!!) in early May.
Erin wanted a low key shower, so we planned a Thursday evening of desserts and drinks to toast the mom-to-be. I’ve never heard of a shower being held on a Thursday night, but it was a nice departure from the normal, and it seemed like a more convenient time for many of the other moms who were in attendance to get away. Erin’s sister-in-law, Julie, who lives nearby, graciously hosted the event at her beautiful home.
We hired a caterer who made five different types of desserts for guests to enjoy, such as Fresh Fruit Tarts, which she served in a shortbread cookie shell as opposed to a traditional sucrée tart shell. I really liked this twist on a classic and may try to create something similar in the future. She also made Crème de Menthe Brownies, Coconut Cupcakes with an angel food cake base, Crepes filled with lemon curd and served with fresh berries, and a Skinny Chocolate Cheesecake served with raspberries. The desserts were a big hit, and the caterer did a great job; she told me she is more of a cook than a pastry chef though! I only wish I could have catered Erin’s shower myself, but since I don’t live there, and it would be too hard to travel with all of the tools I would need, it didn’t work out this time.
As a party favor for all of the guests, I had my friend Beth at I Heart Butter make some custom monogram cookies for the baby shower that matched the shower invitation, which was a blue and white chevron pattern with gray text. As always, Beth’s cookies turned out perfect – she is truly an artist – and were the perfect complement to the evening.
It was so fun to see all many of my girlfriends from Vanderbilt as we celebrated Erin and her baby bump – doesn’t she look great by the way?!? If only everyone looked this good at 8 months pregnant!
